Mobile screen: 8 things to know

The Mobile screen defines your smartphone. This is why its size and the quality of image it reproduces determines, to a large extent, your overall experience of using a smartphone.

No wonder mobile phone makers are investing a fortune in screen technologies. But what makes one screen better than the other? Here are some mainstream technologies behind smartphone displays.

LCD

LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, is the most common flat panel display. It uses a combination of layers of liquid crystals and a backlight to produce an image. The properties of the liquid crystals to block or allow light change as current is applied

TFT

TFT or Thin Film Transistor is used to improve readability of LCD panels. Transistors are embedded within the panel itself, reducing crosstalk between pixels and improving image stability. Used mainly in entry-level handsets with colour screens.

IPS-LCD

IPS, or In Plane Switching, is a further evolution of the LCD, invented by Hitachi and LG to improve on colours and viewing angles of TFT displays.

Retina

Introduced by Apple, this type of LCD uses pixels smaller than the human retina can perceive. Retina displays are found in fourth-generation iPod Touch and iPhone 4/4S.

OLED

OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diodes, produce their own light rather than relying on a backlight. It offers a brighter, more vivid picture with a higher contrast ratio on lower power consumption.

AMOLED

AMOLED, or Active Matrix OLEDs, allow for a larger size screen with a higher number of pixels.

SuperAMOLED

SuperAMOLED Plus & AMOLED Advanced are improvements that increase brightness, reduce reflectance or lower power consumption.

S-LCD

Super, or S-LCD, is a corporation founded by Samsung and Sony. S-LCDs use technology that brings quality and contrast levels to near-Amoled standards, but at a lower price.

Panjaa Review

Panjaa Review – Panjaa Movie Review, Rating, Telugu Movie: Power Star Pawan Kalyan, who is due for a hit post Jalsa, came up with Panjaa. Like every Pawan film, this has been riding high on expectations. Fans are expecting nothing short of a blockbuster with Panjaa. But did Power star deliver the goods? Here is Panjaa Review in detail…

Story:

Jai (Pawan Kalyan) is a loyal follower of Bhagavan (Jackie Shroff), who is a big don in Kolkata. Kulakarni (Atul Kulakarni) is the rival of Bhagavan. Jai has a friend named Jahnavi (Anjali Lavania) who is a club dancer. Bhagavan’s sadistic son Munna (Adivi Seshu) has an eye on her. Meanwhile Jai falls in love with Sandhya (Sarah Jane). Munna kills Jahnavi as she rejects him. Then Jai kills him in turn. Now Jai becomes the prime target for Bhagavan. What happens next is to be seen on the screen.

Analysis:

Panjaa is mainly an action drama laced with romance. Director Vishnu Vardhan didn’t try to focus on Pawan Kalyan’s star image. He scripted the story and character as per his will and he did what he believed in.

This may not go down well with the loyalists of Pawan Kalyan. There isn’t any special mark of Pawan Kalyan in the film. It is Vishnu Vardhan’s film with Pawan playing the lead role. So, obviously there isn’t any glorified heroism or build up. Class fans of Pawan Kalyan may like this new dimension, but mass fans might be terribly disappointed.

The story takes off on a slow note and drags until the character of Adivi Sesh turns wild. The buildup towards the interval is the best part in the film as per the screenplay is concerned. Second half starts on a completely different note. Lot of under developed clichéd characters enters the frame and it only gets interesting towards the end. In the middle there is Paparayudu song to pump in some energy.

On a whole, Panjaa is a technically well made film which didn’t have the legs to survive at the box office for a long period. A lot will depend on Pawan Kalyan’s crowd pulling capabilities to bail out this one from sinking at the box office.

Performances:

Pawan Kalyan underplayed his character to the perfection. He is believable as the loyal follower of a deadly don. His getup is Okay and his dances in Paparayudu song will be a treat to fans. Sarah Jane Dias lacks the looks, but carries off her character in an Okay manner. Anjali Lavania is hot looking but again lacks good looks. Sesh Adivi is a revelation. He delivered a mind blowing performance as a sadistic villain.

Jackie Shroff is alright and Atul Kulakarni is stiff. Brahmanandam excelled in Paparayudu song sequence. Ali is neat. Subba Raju is fine. Tanikella Bharani is good as a wicked man.

Technicalities:

Dialogues by Abburi Ravi are not up to the mark. There are very few lines which sound good and seems like some thought is put in. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is good. Ela Ela song is superb. Songs are not utilized by the director. Placing title song after the end card is a blunder. Background score is very good. Cinematography is awesome and editing is very fine. Production values are laudable.

Director Vishnu Vardhan showed his brilliance in few scenes. He excelled in getting the action part right. There are many plot holes and loose ends in the film. As a script writer Vishnu showed some hurriedness and failed to make it a rounded script. Writer in him has let down the director.

Final Word:

Panjaa is a stylishly made action film which may not appeal to all the sections of audience. People who look for some novelty in dealing a star’s film without all those clichés may like it. The percentage of such audience will be always low and let’s see if Panjaa sets a new trend in bringing a sea change to our Tollywood style.

Panjaa Movie Rating: 3.75/5

7 Kinds of “Hits” in the film industry

Back in the day the difference between a hit, average & flop was clear. A hit meant that film that was seen & liked by a lot of people & collected good money. It usually collects 120-150% of the budget. A superhit film was one that did exceedingly well at boxoffice. It was quite simple to know which movie was a hit & which wasn’t.
But modern-day film business is so complex, that it is very hard to classify a movie. Also the term “hit” has become vague and relative. Almost like the idea of ‘good’. What might seem ‘good’ to one person or segment, might seem ‘bad’ to another. Likewise, a film may be or seem like a hit to some people or segments, while it is not one to some. Confused? Read on. Not all ‘hits’ in the industry are the same. They come in 7 varieties. But what the industry needs today is the last one I mentioned, the good old “hits” or ‘universal hits’ as they’re known today. Though, I have written this keeping Telugu Cinema in mind, the same applies to Bollywood & Tamil cinema.
Producer safe, distributors loss : The movie’s producer makes the film with his money, adds a handsome margin and sells it off to distributors. Regardless of the movie’s performance at boxoffice he is “safe”. In most cases even if the movie collects well, because of the high prices it was sold for, it won’t be financially profitable for the distributors.
Distributor safe, producer loss : This is a rare instance but does happen often. Often, the movie goes over-budget or was shot was beyond its market. In that case, the producer sells it off for less than the movie’s budget and limits his loss. Unless the movie goes onto be a smashing blockbuster, its unlikely he will recoup his costs. If the movie does ‘well enough’, the distributors who invested in the film would make small sums, where as the Producer would go home with a loss. For ex : A film that released in 2010, was made on a budget of 14 crores. The producer could sell the theatrical rights of the movie only for 8 crores. He raised another 4 crores from satellite, music, overseas & home-video rights. In all he made 12 crore of business and took a hit of 2 crores. When the film released, it did well and recovered a little over 8 crores at boxoffice. So the trade terms this film a ‘hit’, while in reality it was a loss-making film for the Producer.
Media hit/perception hit : Hits of this variety are more frequent in our industry offlate. The movie usually is a backed with a high-decibel campaign. If the word-of-mouth is even slightly positive, the producer launches a big campaign trumpeting its success by hosting press meets, publishing inflated collections in advertisements and having “paid coverage” in magazines, newspapers & television. In most cases, the film would attained break-even or modest profits, but it’s perceived to be a big hit. While the intelligent section of the audience doesn’t buy the hype, most people are gullible and actually believe the movie is a huge hit. A lot of producers in our industry are not serious filmmakers. They’re here for the kicks, glamour or fame. They are happy living with the “hit” tag, than really making money from the films. Hence we see more of “perception hits” these days.
ROI Hit : This is the “Return on Invesment” hit. Some films might not collect a big sum at the boxoffice or enjoy a great word-of-mouth, but because of the low cost it was made or sold for, it’s a financially successful project for all or most parties involved. Another case for an ROI hit, is that the film has a A-list star and opened with great hype in hundreds of screens. Though, the response might be mixed due to the superb openings, the movie would have recovered its cost. This is reason distributor’s have craze for movies featuring big actors as they have the crowd-pulling capacity.
Sleeper Hit : Some films when they release have an moderate opening & decent word-of-mouth. Usually, its expected such films don’t last long at boxoffice. But these films, either due to the theme or the loyal audience the star commands makes small sums of money every week, over many weeks. Though in terms of buzz & perception it’s not seen as a big hit, the movie ultimately would have made huge money at boxoffice.
Territorial Hit : Some films perform inconsistently at the boxoffice. Though overall the movie is not counted as a success, some films perform better than expected in certain territories. Usually, the while producer or other distributors might have lost money, the distributor from this one particular territory would have made money. It’s usually because the hero of the film enjoys extra craze in that area, or because of the film’s theme. For ex : Sarkar Raj collected very well in Mumbai as it had ‘local relevance’ where the rest of India it under-performed. Usually, each hero has his bastion where has as edge over other heroes. Also, certain types of films perform better in some areas. Love stories and family dramas tend to do better in Nizam, overseas & Karnataka. There are many instances where some films perform well only in certain territories. There are many instances when movie portals have rubbished film, which fared poorly overseas but went onto be blockbusters in India. This happens in Bollywood too.
Hit/Superhit/Blockbuster : These are films which enjoy a good word-of-mouth, collect very well and are financially profitable to all the parties involved – producer, distributors & exhibitors. Like I said earlier, the industry needs more hits of this variety – a film that qualifies to be called a success on most counts.

Power star's PANJA Set Records

Power star's PANJAA Comming to set records

Power star's PANJA Story

The best rumor in Film circles floating from last 48 hours is about pawan kalyan’s new project ‘Panjaa.’ Yes, the movie is known to be unofficially inspired from Hollywood flick ‘The Punisher.’ Given the stylish taking of Vishnuvardhan and depth of concept in the original version, definitely there are chances of ‘Panjaa’ turning out to be one such film for which Power Star Fans are waiting from a very long time.

The most exciting point in ‘Panjaa’ will be that hero character of pawan kalyan will be killed with in first fifteen minutes as the movie starts. This is a dynamic task because a star like Pawan getting his role ended in very start will have to be taken from an experiment point of view. Then remaining part of flick runs on unraveling the mystery and identity of Pawan, who will be an undercover RAW Agent on duty to erase Mafia.

Knowing about the technical excellence of director Vishnuvardhan, inner sources say that first action scene in ‘Panjaa’ leading to the death of Pawan’s character is most stylishly picturized.
